re: Flight of the Navigator (US)
I know it's old, but it's like a piece of my childhood made real.
Story: A twelve year old boy, David Scott Freeman, disappears for eight years and mysteriously returns in the same place he left, but his family have moved on without him. Then the spaceship, Max, shows up. David is kidnapped by NASA and has to escape. There's plenty of Beach Boys playing. Oh, and a creepily-cute alien creature.
Art Style: 80's-type Disney movie. Like D.A.R.Y.L, Herbie, etc. The movie is definitely dated, with old-fashioned special effects and the usual craptastic film that was used back in the day.
Slash Factor: The main character is a twelve year old boy, so... no. But there's potential for future-fics where David is all grown up and dealing with the weirdness, or the return of the drone ship.
Score: 3 out of 5
Watchability: 4 out of 5 for the nostalgia factor
Will I Buy It: Probably not. I enjoy seeing it every once and awhile on the Disney channel or one of the main networks, but I'm not spending money, 'cause I'm poor.
Movies like "Flight of the Navigator," "Explorers," "Weird Science," "Real Genius," and "D.A.R.Y.L" are pieces of my childhood I never really left behind. Along with "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," they're kind of always percolating somewhere in the background of my mind in one form or another. Spaceships, aliens, snarky teenagers way too smart for their own good, and young guys doing dumb stuff.
Sometimes I totally feel like a twelve year old boy. Heh.
Maybe someone should start a LJ community of Nostalgia Fics. Old movies taken one step further, with favored characters fleshed out and given new adventures.
