It was obvious that things had changed between Rodney and Dr. Fox. Comments had already been made and there was largely open speculation about what they got up to in their off time... and who was the bottom.
Those who had been allowed to speak to Dr.Fox all said he was a good guy. But hardly anyone else had even been allowed to greet him in passing without having McKay or Zelenka jumping all over them, warning them off with hostile glares and the scientists' own version of junkyard dog behavior.
Even though he had only been on Atlantis for a short time, Fox had managed to fully integrate himself amongst the old school scientists. Even Kavanaugh didn't try to challenge his position in the hierarchy.
Someone made the comment that Fox was the new Alpha Bitch in the geek pack of Atlantis and the idea had stuck. Though of course no one would ever think of saying anything where McKay himself could hear. That would be virtual suicide.
No, all there were were background murmurs. Which in some ways could be even more damaging than outright accusations.
Even though Rodney still went on missions with them, half the time it felt like he wasn't there He just did the job and went home... to JASON.
John found himself really hating Jason Fox. The guy was just too good-natured, honest, handsome, kind, and witty. It just wasn't fair, especially since he got Rodney too.
John found himself going after the guy for petty reasons. Like his habit of wearing non-reg tee shirts and jeans around Atlantis. He just didn't seem to have any respect for the rules.
Rodney had taken to keeping his "friend" away from all non-scientists, and John knew it had been his fault.
Because even though he hadn't said anything to Dr. Jason Fox himself, he had made several polite comments to Rodney, Zelenka, Weir, Bates... and just about everyone else. And they were all about Jason Fox's lack of respect for the rules of Atlantis.
For his pains all he had received were several strange looks and the suggestion from Elizabeth that he calm down, relax, and maybe face his problems in a more adult manner. Which he didn't understand at all since he didn't have any problems. Everything was perfectly fine.
Sitting with Teyla and Ronon in the mess hall, he glared across the intervening space at Rodney sitting at the "nerd" table. And parked on the chair next to him, wearing a faint smile and listening intently to every word Rodney said was Jason Fox.
"You are grinding your teeth very loudly."
John blinked back to reality, turning his head to look at Teyla. "Huh?"
She gave him that faintly quizzical look of hers. "You were grinding your teeth."
John sighed. "Sorry."
"What is troubling you?" she asked him.
"Nothing," he said. Then at her doubtful look he used the old Earther fallback. "I was just thinking of home."
She gave him a sympathetic look and for a moment he almost felt guilty for misleading her. Then she said, "I thought you were once again berating yourself for not pursuing your chance with Dr. McKay. But I am sorry you miss your home. I still regret the loss of my own, but at least my surviving people are here on this world."
John felt himself going white. "Chance with Rodney? What chance did I want with Rodney?"
She gave him a knowing look. "The same chance with Rodney that Dr. Fox accepted when it presented itself to him."
For a moment he wanted to slap her hard across the face. He wanted to lunge across the table and slam her head hard over and over aqgain into the unforgiving metal. But he forced control on himself. And not completely because she would probably kick his ass.
"I have to go," he said abruptly, shoving his chair back with a loud scraping sound.
Teyla gave him a pitying look. "You have much to do."
"That's right," he said. "I have a job to do." A job he could bury himself in so he didn't have to picture Rodney with Jason, fucking. "See you."
He could feel her eyes on his back as he left, feeling sorry for him. And the fact that Ronon had said nothing at all was actually pretty telling..
John hurried out of the mess, fighting to ignore the weight of eyes. He would find something for himself to do so he didn't have to think of Rodney and Jason, didn't have to burn with this sick kind of jealousy.

He couldn't help the stupid grin on his face. He had tried several times to get his lips to behave, but they kept twitching into a smile that would widen into something more.
Peter knew his brother would shit his pants if he knew where he was and where he was going. For once in his life he was doing something Jason had never managed... he was going to another world.
"Major Fox?"
Peter turned around, forcing his shit-eating grin off his face. "Sir?"
General Landry smiled at him, an almost fatherly expression. "Relax, son. I just had a few things I wanted you to pass on to Dr. Fox."
"Excuse me, sir?" Peter blinked.
The general held out a flat plastic case. "There are letters from his family and a few personal effects I was asked to pass on. I thought you might be the best to trust this with."
"Uh, sir, what's this about?" Peter asked, his brow wrinkling confusedly. He was about to go to another world, to ATLANTIS, so what did that have to do with his brother?
"Your brother is Dr. Jason Fox, correct?" Landry said.
"Yes," Peter said slowly.
"Well, he's been stationed on Atlantis for several months now."
Peter felt his eyes go wide. "Jason's on Atlantis?"
"You didn't know? His presence there is why there was such an issue about your being posted on Atlantis. There was a serious concern that your relationship might get in the way of your doing your duty."
"Jason's on Atlantis," Peter repeated dumbly, feeling himself being shoved back into his brother's shadow.
"I bet you'll be glad to see your brother again," Landry said.
There were a thousand things Peter could say, but he swallowed them all back down. "I'll make sure he gets this," he said, lifting the box. "Now if you'll excuse me, sir..."
Landry nodded. "Good luck."
"Thank you, sir." Peter lifted his pack and slipped it over his shoulders. He still felt like his stomach was down around his knees, but he could deal. He had had years to become used to Jason being smarter and better at nearly everything.
"You ready to go, sir?"
Peter gave Captain Annabelle Lombard a faint smile he really didn't feel. "I've been ready for this for my entire life. Atlantis."
Lombard grinned. "I can't believe we're really here. First there's stargates, now we're going to a whole 'nother galaxy to Atlantis."
"It's not all fun and games though, Captain," Peter cautioned. "The Atlantis expedition is being threatened by the Wraith. Plus there is only limited power for their stargate. If things go south, we might never see Earth again."
"Still, sir," Lombard said, "it's worth it."
Peter smiled at her, a more real expression than before. "It is."
Sure, he was being tucked back into his younger brother's shadow, but it was worth it. He was going to another world to have the kinds of adventures he had always dreamed of. And he wasn't going to let Jason's presence ruin any of it.
"Let's get aboard the Daedalus for an eighteen day tour."
"Just as long as it doesn't turn out like the voyage of the SS Minnow."
"You can be Gilligan," Peter said.
"So does that make you Mary Ann?" Lombard teased.
"Hey! I would think that I would at least rate being a movie star." Peter walked away whistling the theme to Gilligan's Island.
He still wasn't happy about Jason being on Atlantis, but there was nothing he could do about it. What was done was done.
