.
When he had walked into the mess hall and seen Jason talking to a soldier, Rodney had felt a surge of jealousy. Especially when he saw that the brown-haired man was young, good-looking, and had the rank of major.
To see Jason standing so close to and talking so intimately with the man made a sick feeling rise up in Rodney's stomach.
He knew that even if he had a phenomenal intellect, he still wasn't much in the looks department. And personality... well, he had loads of personality, just not of the kind most people wanted to spend any length of time around.
So he was honest enough with himself to admit that he really wasn't the greatest catch of the century, which was why he had spent the bulk of his adult life being alone. And now he had finally found someone that filled up the empty spaces he had been training himself to ignore, and he really couldn't help the fear that went through him at the thought of losing what he had found, either at the hands of the Wraith or to someone better looking and younger.
Rodney couldn't help the jolt of jealousy and fear that went through him at the sight of Jason talking intimately to someone else. Then to find out the man was Jason's brother... It was a whole new kind of terror.
Jason hadn't gone into any real great detail about his family, but he had told Rodney a few things. About his mother's strange health food kink and gentle eyes. About his father's comical incompetence with all things technology related. About his brother's heartbreak at losing his young wife when they were nineteen. About his sister's failed modeling dreams and new career as a spokesman for "Au Natural Beauty" cosmetics. And about how he had never bothered to tell his family he was gay.
With Peter's eyes burning into him, Rodney felt about ten inches tall. So he did what he always did when feeling threatened... he pulled on the arrogance. "Its good to meet you. Jason has told me so much about you."
"That's funny," Peter drolled. "Jason hasn't told me anything about you."
Rodney had never been exactly great at dealing with family, his own or otherwise, and he could already tell this wasn't destined to go well.
It was always an uncomfortable situation meeting a lover's family, but when his lover was still in the closet... The big reveal was never pretty.
There was always awkwardness when he had to let someone's family know he was fucking their son, daughter, brother, sister, cousin, etc. And there was always the personal embarrassment when he had to deal with their disbelief that anyone would want to have sex with him. As if he was really that unappealing...
"Stop it, Peter," Jason said, his voice managing to almost sound sharp. "Rodney and I are together and we're happy that way, so don't try to screw it up by being an ass."
Peter looked surprised for a moment before his face went military bank. "Whatever. You want to screw your boss... well that's up to you. Just don't come crying to me when it falls apart."
"It's not going to fall apart," Jason said firmly. "Rodney loves me and I love him."
"You don't even know what love is, or have you forgotten?" The scornful tone of Peter's voice was meant to cause pain.
There was no expression on Jason's face as he looked at his brother. "I know more about it than you do."
There was the momentary flash of a stricken expression on Peter's face, but it was gone almost too quick to see.
Rodney felt kind of uncomfortable witnessing the confrontation between the two brothers, but there was no way he was leaving. Because he somehow knew that his wandering off right now would be seen as him running away. And Jason was too important to him for him to allow there to be such a misunderstanding.
"Don't come crawling to me when you realize what a mistake you've made," Peter said, backing away from his brother, something viciously ugly lurking in his voice.
"I'm not making a mistake," Jason said. "I'm actually happy for once."
"As happy as you ever get," Peter snarled.
"Fine," Jason said, with a faint note of defeat. "I am as happy as I ever get, happier than I have been for a long time. And I really don't understand why that makes you so angry. It has nothing to do with you."
"Whatever," Peter said. "You used to be my brother and..."
"Used to be?" Jason said. "I still am your brother, always and forever."
Peter rolled his shoulders as though resettling an invisible weight. "You just keep telling yourself that."
"Ah, sir, what's going on?" a young lieutenant asked, stepping forward.
Peter looked startled, as if just remembering where they were. "It's nothing," he said to his subordinate. "I was just saying hello to my little brother," with a pointed look at Jason.
"This is your brother, sir?" the lieutenant asked. He offered a bright smile to Jason. "Nice to meet you, sir. I am Lieutenant Gordon Hart. It's been a pleasure serving under the major. He's a good man."
"That's good to know. I'm Dr. Jason Fox, astrophysics. And this," he gestured, "is our Chief Science Officer Dr. Rodney McKay."
"Pleased to meet you, sir," Hart said.
"That remains to be seen," Rodney said, moving to stand side-by-side with Jason.
Lieutenant Farmboy looked surprised by his waspishness, but visibly shrugged it off. "I'm glad to be here," he said. "I never thought I would end up anywhere like this when I left basic, but... I'm glad."
The kid was so earnest that not even Rodney could be too snarky. "Whatever," he said, turning his attention away from the kid. That kind of hopeful puppyishness made him nauseous if he looked directly at it for too long.
Without realizing it, he had sidled closer to Jason, close enough he could almost feel the warmth of his skin through his clothes. Close enough he could almost pretend things weren't as awkward as he knew they were.
Looking at Peter, he could tell the man wasn't going to continue his snarking in front of his men. He was just going to give them unpleasant looks and act coldly polite.
"Major!" Rodney called, spotting Lorne coming into the mess.
The major looked surprised for a moment, but he wandered over. "Yeah, McKay?"
Rodney licked his lips and drew himself up tall. "Do you think you can show Major Fox and his men to where they're supposed to be staying?"
"Major Fox?" Lorne's eyes flicked from Peter to Jason and back to Rodney.
"He's my brother," Jason said.
Lorne's eyebrows leveled off. "I can see the resemblance."
Rodney gave him a sharp look and Lorne was smart enough not to meet his eyes.
Without another word, Lorne tapped his radio. "This is Lorne. Can anyone tell me where Major Fox and his men are bivouaced?" There was the ghostly murmur of a voice responding. "All right. I got it." He turned to Peter. "If you're ready, I can show you to your assigned quarters."
"Thanks," Peter said. "I think me and my men will eat later. We just have to gather up our gear and you can show us where we're staying."
Rodney wanted to yell at the guy for leaving without saying another word to Jason.
He may not have been the best at dealing with family, but Rodney knew there were just some things you didn't do. As in all things, there was a familial protocol to be followed. And Peter had just broken it.
"You all right?" he asked quietly.
Jason smiled at him, though there might have been a shadow in his eyes. "I'm fine," he said.
Even knowing Jason was covered in an emotional armor far thicker than his own, Rodney could tell Jason was disturbed.
There was always just something so disquieting about a confrontation with family, as though the whole world had somehow been thrown out of sync. It was one of the main reasons Rodney mostly avoided his own family.
"Come on," Rodney said. "I think they've got chocolate pudding."
Jason gave him a small half-smile. "You're oddly endearing."
Rodney laughed. "Sure."
